WRX VB Intercooler Guide

FMIC vs upgraded top-mount on the FA24 — and why your tune comes first.

Verdict

On the FA24, the stock intercooler is the first real heat-soak bottleneck — but you must be tuned (or tuning the same day) before you bolt one on, or you'll chase boost creep instead of power.

Why the FA24 needs a better intercooler

The factory top-mount intercooler is one of the most heat-soak-prone parts of the VB chassis. On a stock tune you'll feel it after one hard pull on a warm day; on anything above OTS Stage 1, intake air temps climb fast and the ECU pulls timing to protect itself. A larger core — whether an upgraded top-mount or a full front-mount — restores consistent power between pulls. But only if your tune is matched to the new airflow and boost behavior.

Top-mount upgrade vs front-mount

What 'tune ready' actually means

At minimum, your car needs an Accessport with a current OTS map and a tuner contact lined up for a revision after install. The OTS map will keep the car safe on the drive home, but expect to schedule a custom revision within the first week — boost targets, wastegate duty cycle, and IAT compensation tables all need adjustment for the larger core.

Pre-purchase checks for this mod

  • 1Confirm your tuning solution (Accessport with current OTS map or active e-tuner) is in place before install — not after
  • 2Inspect crash bar clearance and intercooler core thickness against your bumper support; some FMICs require trimming
  • 3Plan for a tune revision within 1–2 weeks of install — boost targets and IAT compensations need adjustment to the new core
