WRX VB Suspension Guide
Springs for stance, coilovers for control — and how wheel fitment forces the choice.
Verdict
On a daily-driven VB a quality lowering spring with matched dampers gets you 90% of the look and feel of coilovers — but the moment you talk track days or aggressive wheel fitment, coilovers become non-negotiable.
How the VB sits from the factory
Subaru built the VB with a softer baseline than the previous-gen STI and a noticeably higher ride height than most enthusiasts expect. That tuning is good for compliance and ride quality, but it leaves the car looking tall and feeling vague on turn-in. Most owners chase one of two goals: drop it 1–1.5 inches for stance and feel, or take real control of damping and corner balance for performance driving.
Springs vs coilovers — the honest tradeoff
Lowering springs on factory dampers are cheap, easy, and reversible — but the stock struts aren't valved for the increased spring rate, so ride quality degrades over time and damper life shortens. Coilovers cost 3–5× more, require corner balancing, and only reward owners who actually adjust them. If you'll set them once and forget them, you're paying for capability you won't use. If you'll dial them in per season or per event, nothing else comes close to the control they offer.
Pre-purchase checks for this mod
- 1Decide your final wheel offset and tire size before suspension — drop directly interacts with fitment and rub clearance
- 2Confirm a local alignment shop comfortable with VB camber and toe specs; corner-balancing is shop-specific
- 3Budget for ancillaries (endlinks, bump stops, extended studs, camber bolts) at install time — not after
