Best Exhausts for the 2022+ WRX
One of these three makes power. The other two make noise, and that is a fine reason to buy them.
Verdict
A J-pipe is the only exhaust part that makes real power on a VB, and it requires a tune. Axle-backs and cat-backs are sound purchases - buy a resonated one if you commute, and budget it out of entertainment money rather than power money.
Three sections, one of which matters for power
The VB exhaust runs turbo, J-pipe with the primary catalyst, mid-section, then the rear muffler assembly. Aftermarket parts replace it in three chunks. An axle-back replaces only the rearmost section behind the axle. Cheapest, easiest, purely a sound and appearance change. Roughly $320 to $490. A cat-back replaces everything from the catalyst back. More piping, more sound change, still downstream of every restriction that matters. Roughly $650 to $1,700. A J-pipe replaces the section immediately after the turbo, including the primary catalyst. This is the only one that removes a genuine restriction, and it is the only one that makes real power. Roughly $616 to $1,395, and it requires a tune. That is the whole hierarchy. On a turbocharged engine the turbine is already the dominant restriction, and everything behind the catalyst is fighting over scraps. If your goal is horsepower, you are shopping for a J-pipe. If your goal is sound, the other two are cheaper and simpler ways to get it.

Do I need a tune for an axle-back or cat-back exhaust on the 2022+ WRX?
No. Both sit behind the catalytic converter, so neither changes what the ECU measures. Fit one and drive - no tune, no check engine light, and almost no power either.

Do I need a tune for a J-pipe on the 2022+ WRX?
Yes, always. A J-pipe changes exhaust backpressure and turbo behavior enough that the stock tune is no longer correct, and a catless one will set a check engine light regardless.

Which exhaust should I buy, and how bad is drone/cold start?
Buy resonated or muffled if you commute. Drone lands right at highway cruise rpm on this car and is the single most common reason people sell an exhaust at a loss.

warranty
Will mods void my warranty?
Not automatically - that is not how it works. But a tune or any power modification makes a powertrain claim much harder, and the ECU records reflashes even after you return to stock.
