Best Drivetrain Mods for the 2022+ WRX
From $25 bushings to five-figure gearbox decisions, in the order that actually makes sense.
Verdict
Fix shifter feel first for under $150, then mounts if the drivetrain feels loose under load. A clutch is a power decision, not a feel decision - do not buy one until torque demands it, and treat the gearbox itself as the platform's real ceiling.
Four different problems, four different budgets
Drivetrain modification covers a range so wide that treating it as one category leads people badly astray. Split it properly. Shifter feel is a linkage problem, costs $25 to $150, and improves every single drive. This is where almost everyone should start. Drivetrain movement under load is a mount problem, costs $80 to $250, and shows up as a shudder on throttle transitions or a sense that the whole powertrain shifts around before it pushes the car. Clutch capacity is a power problem, costs $580 to $750 plus substantial labor, and only becomes relevant when torque exceeds what the factory clutch holds. Gearbox capacity is the platform's real ceiling, costs five figures to address properly, and is where big-power VB builds go to die financially. Those are not steps on a ladder. Most owners should do the first, some should do the second, and the third and fourth only matter if you have made real power.
Start with shifter feel
The VB shifts competently and feels vague, and the fix is cheap enough to be almost unreasonable. Solid shifter bushings, roughly $25 to $40, replace the factory rubber that deflects under load. This removes most of the rubbery imprecision and is the single most satisfying change available to this gearbox. A shift stop, roughly $35, limits over-travel so each engagement feels definite rather than loose. Together that is under $80 and it addresses the majority of what owners mean when they say the shifter feels cheap. A short shifter is available as a third step, but it trades increased effort for reduced throw, so fit the first two and drive the car before deciding whether you want it. The tradeoff across all of these is noise. Factory rubber isolates transmission sound from the cabin, and removing it lets more gear whine through. Most owners consider that a feature. This category is covered in full detail in the dedicated shifter guide, but the summary is simple: it is the best value in VB modification and almost nobody regrets it.

Why is the 1-2 shift so rough, and how do I make the manual smoother?
It is normal and mostly technique. Shift out of first higher, around 3,000 to 3,500 rpm, and let the car warm up. Then fix the linkage vagueness with bushings if you want it crisper.

How much power can the stock FA24 engine handle?
The short block is generally considered safe to around 400whp, with real caution beyond 400 to 450. But you will hit the stock turbo around the low 300s and the stock transmission's torque limit well before the engine becomes the problem.

Is the SPT/CVT reliable, and how much tuning can it handle?
More reliable than its reputation, and genuinely good as a daily. It is torque-limited rather than power-limited, so a tune must be shaped around holding torque back rather than chasing a peak figure.
