Best Mods Before a WRX Tune
What genuinely needs to be on the car before a tuner touches it - and what does not.
Verdict
For a Stage 1 tune, install nothing - just confirm the car is healthy and running the fuel you intend to keep using. For Stage 2, the real list is intake, intercooler, fuel system, and a boost-leak-free intake tract, all fitted before the tuner starts.
The short answer
For a Stage 1 tune on a VB, you need nothing. No intake, no intercooler, no charge pipe. Stage 1 maps are written for a stock airflow path, and adding parts to that path before the tune makes the map less accurate, not more. Buy the tuning device, run the map, drive the car. For a Stage 2 tune the list is four items and it is genuinely required: an intake, an intercooler, a leak-free charge path, and whatever fuel system your target fuel demands. Those are not accessories. A Stage 2 map assumes they exist and will make boost the stock hardware was not asked to handle. Everything else marketed as a supporting mod - turbo inlets, catch cans, pulleys, cosmetic charge pipes - is optional. Some are genuinely good parts. None of them change whether your tune succeeds.

Do I need a tune for an intake system on the VB?
It depends on the exact intake and calibration. Some VB products are manufacturer-validated for the stock calibration, while others require or include a matching map. Follow the intake maker's instructions and confirm the full hardware, fuel, and tune combination.

Is an Accessport/tune worth it on a mostly stock VB?
Yes, if you are past warranty concerns. It is the single best value modification on the platform - roughly 35 wheel horsepower and a 48 percent torque increase, which no bolt-on comes close to.

What fuel should I run: 91, 93, or can I use 87?
Premium, always. Subaru specifies 91 octane or higher, so 91 is the floor rather than the target. Run 93 if it is available, and never run 87.

Will mods void my warranty?
Not automatically - that is not how it works. But a tune or any power modification makes a powertrain claim much harder, and the ECU records reflashes even after you return to stock.
