Best Tires for the 2022+ WRX
The cheapest way to make a VB genuinely faster, and the one upgrade that works on every road.
Verdict
A quality summer tire on a stock-power VB beats a tuned VB on worn all-seasons on any road with corners. Buy tires before power, match the compound to your actual climate, and never run summer tires in freezing conditions.
Why tires beat power on this car
Every input you give a car reaches the road through four contact patches roughly the size of your hand. Power that exceeds what those patches can transmit does not make you faster - it makes wheelspin, understeer and longer braking distances. The VB is all-wheel drive, which hides this better than a rear-drive car does. It puts power down well enough that owners rarely feel traction-limited in a straight line, and conclude their tires are fine. They then discover the limit in a corner in the wet, which is a worse place to find it. A quality summer tire against a worn all-season is worth more on a back road than a Stage 1 tune, and unlike the tune it also shortens your braking distance and raises your wet grip. It is the only modification that makes the car better at every single thing it does. The reason people skip it is that tires are a consumable rather than a modification. There is no forum thread celebrating your new tires and nothing to photograph in the engine bay. That is a bad reason to keep driving on a compound that is limiting the car.
The three categories, honestly
All-season tires are a compromise and the compromise is real. They work across a wide temperature range, they are quiet, they last a long time, and they give up meaningful dry and wet grip against a summer tire. For a VB that lives in a climate with genuine winters and no second set of wheels, they are the sensible default and there is no shame in it. A good modern all-season is far better than the category's reputation. Summer tires are where the VB comes alive. Substantially more dry grip, better wet grip in warm rain, sharper turn-in and a clearer sense of what the front axle is doing. The tradeoff is that they are genuinely dangerous below roughly 45F, where the compound goes hard and grip falls off a cliff - including on dry roads. This is not a comfort issue, it is a safety one. Extreme performance and track tires trade tread life and wet behaviour for maximum dry grip. If you autocross or do track days, the difference is enormous. As a daily tire they wear quickly, tramline more, and are worse in standing water than a good summer tire. Buy them for the events, not the commute. Winter tires are a separate category, not an upgrade path. If you see real snow and ice, nothing else substitutes, and all-wheel drive helps you accelerate while doing nothing for your ability to stop or turn.

What wheel and tire specs fit best on the VB?
18x9.5 +38 on 255/35 is the proven baseline at or near stock height. Lower the car, go taller or wider, or pick a tire that runs wide, and rubbing at the rear flare becomes likely.

What are the best first mods for a stock WRX VB?
Tires, shifter bushings and a rear sway bar. Under a thousand dollars including tires, no tune required, and they improve things you experience on every single drive.

Will mods void my warranty?
Not automatically - that is not how it works. But a tune or any power modification makes a powertrain claim much harder, and the ECU records reflashes even after you return to stock.

Is an Accessport/tune worth it on a mostly stock VB?
Yes, if you are past warranty concerns. It is the single best value modification on the platform - roughly 35 wheel horsepower and a 48 percent torque increase, which no bolt-on comes close to.
