WRX Build Path by Budget
Four complete shopping lists for the VB, with real prices and nothing padded to hit a number.
Verdict
The $1,500 tier is the best value on the platform and the only one most owners need; $500 cannot buy power on a VB and should go toward the chassis instead.
How to read these tiers
These are four separate plans, not four steps of one plan. If you are heading for the $3,000 build, go there directly - buying the $1,500 list first and upgrading later costs more, because you end up paying for two tunes and reselling parts at a loss. The tiers are also parts budgets. Labor is extra, and it matters most at the $5,000 tier where a downpipe and intercooler install can add several hundred dollars if you are not doing it yourself. One structural fact shapes all four lists: on the FA24 the tuning device is the gate. Below its price you cannot buy meaningful power, and above it almost every part you add depends on it. That is why the $500 tier looks nothing like the other three.
$500 - buy a better car, not a faster one
There is no honest way to add power to a VB for $500. The tuning device alone is $770, and anything you bolt on without it either does nothing or actively risks the engine. Any list that claims otherwise is selling you appearance parts. Spend it on the things that make the car better to drive every day. A pitch stop mount is around $80 to $110 and sharpens throttle response and shift feel by cutting engine movement. Shifter bushings and a short shifter adapter run about $66 together and fix the vague, rubbery throw that is the most common complaint about the VB gearbox. Add a full fluid service and a proper alignment and you have spent your $500 on things you will feel on every drive. The alternative, and the one I would actually recommend, is to spend nothing and save for four months. The $1,500 tier is where this platform comes alive, and getting there sooner beats spending $500 twice.

What are the best first mods for a stock WRX VB?
Tires, shifter bushings and a rear sway bar. Under a thousand dollars including tires, no tune required, and they improve things you experience on every single drive.

Is an Accessport/tune worth it on a mostly stock VB?
Yes, if you are past warranty concerns. It is the single best value modification on the platform - roughly 35 wheel horsepower and a 48 percent torque increase, which no bolt-on comes close to.

What fuel should I run: 91, 93, or can I use 87?
Premium, always. Subaru specifies 91 octane or higher, so 91 is the floor rather than the target. Run 93 if it is available, and never run 87.
