ATLAS Tuning Guide for the 2022+ WRX
Free, open-source, and genuinely deep. The complete picture of what ATLAS does and who it suits.
Verdict
ATLAS is free software plus a cheap adapter that gives you direct access to the ECU, realtime tuning and custom features a handheld cannot add. It suits owners willing to read documentation, and it asks more of you than an off-the-shelf map does.
What ATLAS is
ATLAS is a free, open-source ECU tuning suite developed by North American Motorsports Research, a team of tuners, enthusiasts and motorsports hobbyists. It supports the Subaru WRX in both the VA generation from 2015 to 2021 and the VB generation from 2022 onward, including 2026 cars in manual and automatic form. Structurally it is different from a handheld device. ATLAS runs on your computer - Windows, Mac or Linux - and communicates with the ECU through an OBD adapter plugged into the car's diagnostic port. There is no dedicated box that lives in the vehicle. What you get is a genuine tuning environment rather than a map selector: a 2 to 3 dimension table editor for working directly with the ECU's maps, datalogging with visualisation, realtime tuning, and a visual logic node graph that compiles new custom logic into the ECU. That last item is the one with no equivalent on a handheld. It is how features the factory ECU never had get added, and it is why ATLAS ships first-party custom features including launch control, boost-by-gear, speed density tuning and multi-map capability. The headline, though, is the price. ATLAS is free and open-source, with no licence fee, no subscription and no per-vehicle unlock. On a platform where the tuning device is usually the largest single line item in a build budget, that is a structural change rather than a discount.
What it costs to actually use
Free software does not mean a free project, so here is the honest accounting. **ATLAS itself: nothing.** No licence, no subscription. **An OBD adapter: your only required purchase.** Several are supported and they differ meaningfully. The OBDX Pro VX is the newest option, wireless over Bluetooth or WiFi and described as lightning-fast. The Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 is the traditional wired choice that most Subaru documentation assumes, though it has been listed as out of stock. The OBDLink EX is wired and noted as slower. Various ELM327 adapters work over serial through a driver built into ATLAS, with quality varying widely between clones. **A laptop: you probably have one.** **A battery charger: not officially required, but treat it as such.** During a flash the car sits ignition-on with the engine off, and voltage is what determines whether the flash completes. **A tune, if you want one written for you.** Free software does not make a tuner's time free. What changes is that you pay for expertise rather than for expertise plus a proprietary device. Compare that to roughly $770 for a handheld and the gap is substantial - a set of tires, or most of a flex fuel system.

No. They are alternatives, not companions. ATLAS plus an OBD adapter does the reading, flashing and datalogging a handheld device would do.
