Full Answer
Speed density is a different way of working out how much air is entering the engine, and on the VB it addresses the platform's central tuning headache directly.
**How the stock system works.** The FA24 measures airflow with a mass airflow sensor and calculates fuel from what that sensor reports. This works well until you change the intake tract, because the relationship between actual airflow and reported airflow depends on the sensor's housing. An intake with a larger housing under-reports, the ECU fuels for the smaller number, and the engine runs lean.
That single mechanism is why intakes require a tune on this car, and why an oversized-housing intake on a stock map has been shown to lean the engine toward 12:1 at the top of the rev range.
**How speed density works.** Instead of relying on the MAF sensor, it calculates airflow using the ideal gas law from TMAP sensor readings - pressure and temperature - tuned through two volumetric efficiency tables. The documented benefits are smoother operation, more precise fuel trims, and tolerance for intake modifications.
That last benefit is the one that changes builds. A fueling strategy that does not depend on MAF housing geometry is a fundamentally different relationship with intake hardware.
**Who actually needs it.** Owners running aftermarket intakes, particularly unusual ones or combinations that no prepared map covers. Owners who have had persistent fuel trim or drivability oddities traceable to airflow measurement. And anyone building something far enough from stock that MAF-based fueling has become a constraint rather than a convenience.
**Who does not.** A stock or lightly modified car with a well-matched map is not suffering from a problem speed density solves. It is a solution to a specific difficulty, and adding complexity you do not need is not an upgrade.
**Requirements.** ATLAS 2026.1 or later. And it is genuinely a tuning task rather than a toggle - those volumetric efficiency tables need populating properly, which means datalogging and iteration. If you are not prepared to do that work or pay someone who will, this is not a quick win.
