Best Intakes for the 2022+ WRX
The intake decision on the VB is really a MAF housing decision. Everything else follows from it.
Verdict
If you are not tuning, buy a stock-diameter MAF housing intake or a drop-in filter - nothing else is safe. If you are tuning, housing size stops mattering and you should buy on build quality, fitment and sound instead.
The only spec that matters
The FA24 works out how much fuel to inject from what its mass airflow sensor reports. That sensor sits in a housing, and the relationship between airflow and sensor reading depends on that housing's diameter. Change the diameter and the sensor under-reports - the engine gets more air than the ECU thinks it does, and it fuels for the smaller number. On the VB the consequence is well documented. Testing on aftermarket intakes with oversized housings has shown air/fuel ratios leaning toward 12:1 at the top of the rev range on the stock tune. Lean under boost is the condition that damages engines, and it is not a subtle margin. So intakes split into two categories that have nothing to do with brand prestige. Stock-diameter housing intakes keep the factory sensor relationship intact and need no retune. Oversized housing intakes need a tune written for them, and are genuinely unsafe without one. Everything else you will read about - filter media, pipe material, powder coat colour - is downstream of that single question.

Do I need a tune for an intake system on the VB?
It depends on the exact intake and calibration. Some VB products are manufacturer-validated for the stock calibration, while others require or include a matching map. Follow the intake maker's instructions and confirm the full hardware, fuel, and tune combination.

Is an Accessport/tune worth it on a mostly stock VB?
Yes, if you are past warranty concerns. It is the single best value modification on the platform - roughly 35 wheel horsepower and a 48 percent torque increase, which no bolt-on comes close to.
