WRX J-Pipe Guide
The only exhaust part that makes real power, and the only one with consequences worth thinking about.
Verdict
A J-pipe is genuinely worth having if you want exhaust power, but buy catted, buy the tune at the same time, and check your local inspection rules before you order - this is the modification most likely to cause you a legal or warranty problem.
What it is and why it matters
The J-pipe, also called the downpipe, is the section immediately after the turbo. It carries exhaust away from the turbine and houses the primary catalytic converter. The name comes from its shape on the Subaru layout. Its significance is that it contains the largest restriction in the exhaust system that you can actually do something about. The turbine itself is the biggest restriction, and you are not removing that. Everything behind the primary catalyst - mid pipes, resonators, mufflers - is fighting over what little pressure drop remains. That is why the J-pipe is the only exhaust part that makes a real difference to power on a VB, and why a cat-back does not. If you have been disappointed by an exhaust purchase, this is almost certainly the part you actually wanted. Prices run roughly $616 to $1,395 for the pipe. Add the tune, add gaskets and hardware, and add labor if you are not doing it yourself.

Do I need a tune for a J-pipe on the 2022+ WRX?
Yes, always. A J-pipe changes exhaust backpressure and turbo behavior enough that the stock tune is no longer correct, and a catless one will set a check engine light regardless.

Do I need a tune for an axle-back or cat-back exhaust on the 2022+ WRX?
No. Both sit behind the catalytic converter, so neither changes what the ECU measures. Fit one and drive - no tune, no check engine light, and almost no power either.

Will mods void my warranty?
Not automatically - that is not how it works. But a tune or any power modification makes a powertrain claim much harder, and the ECU records reflashes even after you return to stock.

Which exhaust should I buy, and how bad is drone/cold start?
Buy resonated or muffled if you commute. Drone lands right at highway cruise rpm on this car and is the single most common reason people sell an exhaust at a loss.
